  “Good. Because we start in bright and early tomorrow morning. Or maybe the day after, if the snow’s still too deep.” He laughed, pulling me into an easy embrace. “I hope you don’t mind, but even though the Souljacker’s taken care of, I want to stick around in your life.” He was staring into my eyes, his voice soft.

  My mind whirled. I didn’t dare use the word…I couldn’t even hope to use it yet, but something in my heart jumped for joy as he gathered me to him, kissing me deeply. His lips were soft and for the first time in a long while, I felt safe.

  “Get a room,” Nate said, laughing, and Dani threw a pillow at us.

  But I didn’t care. I kept kissing Archer, because with all the panic and fear and violence in the world, it seemed like the perfect cure to my melancholy. As I leaned into his arms, a faint movement on my leg startled me. I glanced down, thinking a fly or spider had crawled on me, but to my surprise, the phoenix tattoo had shifted, the tail feathers unfurling a little wider, the colors a little more vivid. Charles was dead, but his work hadn’t been in vain. And it appeared that as we changed, so would the tattoos that mirrored our souls and hearts.
